Small Favors
The Clay Studio's 19th Annual Small Favors Exhibition
Philadelphia, PA
Apr 10th - Jun 29th, 2025
“In 2025 we are excited to present the 19th anniversary of this beloved exhibition. Among almost 400 small artworks displayed in 4-inch cubes you will find big ideas, individuality, and material awareness. To celebrate that this truly is an exhibition for everyone, a few years ago, we began inviting artists outside of the ceramic world to participate. This year we are excited to have art in wood, metal, glass, fiber, paper, and paint. The majority of the works are examples of small ceramic artworks that range from tiny mugs to intricate sculptures.
Artists represented in Small Favors range from the most established ceramic artists in the field, to young artists new to the field. Small Favors engages artists' creativity in new and exciting ways with the challenge of making pieces on a very small scale. For some artists, the work they create is similar to what they normally make, but at a reduced scale. Others use it as an opportunity to break away from what they create in their daily studio practice. There is an open call each year for juried work, as well as a group of invited artists who participate. This year we have artworks coming from Japan, China, and Budapest in addition to those from around the United States.
This range of artists allows us to present works in a broad price range, from $35 to $3,500. We hope that this encourages people to become collectors, as well as established collectors who don't have much more space.”

Opening Reception for “isms: Narratives, Issues, and Difficult Topics of Our Time”
This national juried exhibition will showcase ceramic artists that use the human form as a vehicle to communicate and bring awareness to the often-difficult topics and issues of our time. The ideologies of “isms” are vast and can include, but not limited to socio-political, environmental and cultural issues, racism, religious freedom, war, sexism, gender identity, classism, poverty, substance abuse, gun violence, etc.
Jurors: Kelly and Kyle Phelps
Identical twin brothers Kelly and Kyle Phelps are Professors at private Catholic universities in Ohio. Kelly Phelps is a Professor at Xavier University (Cincinnati), and Kyle is a Professor at the University of Dayton (Dayton) where they head the sculpture and ceramic departments.
